| Our Guests |
|
While every guest is important to us, PFAC has had the honor to welcome a number of illustrious people.
Among the very first was Mr.Viren J.Shah, the then Governor of West Bengal, who inaugurated Ashari in January 2001. |

People For Animals Calcutta aspires to creating a model facility for pets, livestock, strays and birds.
We believe that animal welfare and environmental issues are essential components of human welfare, since our health and economy are affected by animals and nature.
We also believe that cultivating compassionate and proactive attitudes in society – especially the young – is vital for a stable and ethical social order.
The world is facing an unprecedented amount of crime and violence, stress and depression, distrust and interpersonal friction. People are losing faith in the eternal values of goodness, which results in individuals becoming isolated, insulated and unhappy. Animal welfare is a movement that brings economical benefits, and improves the mental and physical health in any society.
It is our belief that people need to get involved in this movement for their own short-term and long-term benefits. We need to use pet therapy to reduce our stress and bring laughter into our homes. We need to think about the suffering of the mute creatures, to realize how much we have to be thankful for. Focusing on what we lack increases our discontent; helping to reduce the suffering in the world enhances our self-image, self-confidence and satisfaction.
Most of the strife we face is due to a lack of compassion and/or understanding. Animal welfare is, perhaps, the only way to reduce the strife we face at every level in our little world. This is the best method available to us and it is our ambition to convey this to sensitive people and encourage them to increase their mental peace and natural joys by joining the movement.
The emotionally insecure – especially children and the aged – benefit greatly by the use of pet therapy. PFAC hopes to promote this easy and inexpensive method by making people aware of how they can befriend the strays to remove loneliness, boredom and tension.
Stray dogs and cats are needed to keep the city free of diseases caused by rats and other creatures. An overpopulation of strays leads to other problems. The ideal is a rabies free city, where all the dogs and cats are sterilized and vaccinated against rabies. This can be achieved if different Clubs like the Rotary, Lions and others, schools and colleges, individuals and groups were to ‘fix’ the strays in their own locality. This would be a great help to the hutment dwellers and passers by, who run the risk of being bitten by a potential rabies carrier.
It is only with the support of society that a meaningful change can be made. We hope to make an impact on the world by the active promotion of compassionate attitudes and a determined effort to reduce – if not remove – the suffering of helpless beings and the very poor who suffer along with them.
We also wish to create awareness of the wide spread, long term harm done by a meat oriented diet. While appreciating fully that it is not easy to make major changes in what we are used to eating, it is our belief that most people would switch to a vegetarian diet if they knew how every morsel of meat contributes to world hunger and environmental damage, apart from being cruel to helpless beings. We ask intelligent people to not allow themselves to be side tracked by aggressive pro-vegetarian groups. Each individual has the right to choose his/her diet and lifestyle. Yet, just as every right thinking person will tell people to stay off drugs and drink, every person who knows how harmful a meat oriented diet is, will want to persuade people to choose what is healthier for them and beneficial for the world. Even a plan to avoid meat once or twice a week will make a considerable difference. |
